Lizzie offered to babysit for me. I should have known that once I was at her house, Sadie happily playing games with Lizzie’s sons, that she’d put me to work.

“Why does it need turmeric and black pepper?” I asked. “Aren’t you punishing these poor people enough?”

“Black pepper helps the turmeric absorption,” she explained.

“Okay but what’s your excuse for the lima beans? Because from here it looks like you’re a pure sadist.”

“They’re super high in manganese,” she said. As if that explained it.

“You don’t even know what manganese is,” I challenged as I measured a large scooper of the bright yellow turmeric into her 42-gallon industrial strength Manic Mincer 8000.

“It helps keep your connective tissues nice and sproingy,” she said, pinching her cheek as if to prove the magical, fountain of youth properties of the nasty bean. “It does lots of other things too, it’s really a Jack of All Trades mineral. It helps your bones, super important for menopausal ladies like you.”

“Hey!” I protested. “You’re only two years younger than me. And I just gave birth.”

“Manganese also helps in mood regulation,” she said with a smirk. “Just saying.”

“I’d be in a better mood if I didn’t have Yellow Lung Disease,” I said as a plume of turmeric wafted into my face.

“The turmeric will bring down any inflammation,” Lizzie promised.

“Are we almost done?” I asked. “You said you’d watch Sadie while the handyman came and now I smell like a bowl of curry.”

“Curry is one of the most widely consumed dishes on the globe,” she said.

“You’ve got an answer to everything, don’t you,” I asked.

“My cinnamon Brussels sprout smoothie has thousands of neuroprotective brain-boosting phytonutrients,” she said.

I set down the measuring cup and dusted my hands on my jean shorts, leaving two Day-Glo yellow handprints. “Can I go now?” I asked.

“Your handyman isn’t coming for another hour,” she said. “Can’t we spend some quality time together?”

“Actually,” I said. The thing about phytonutrients sparked my memory. “I need to ask you about the Ultra Adaptogen Formula Green Machine Blend Plus.”

“Sure, you want to buy some? It’s great.” she said. “They sell it at Bubba’s Organics. “Yeah, an influencer, but for fitness,” she explained.

“And what do you influence?” I asked. “Their smoothie consumption habits?”

“Among other things,” she said. “But you know my first true passion is fitness.” She was right about that. My sister definitely practiced what she preached. But we were getting off topic.

“So that bottle in Mrs. Kensnigton’s purse,” I said.
